    @FearTriX it’s Sn62 soldering (62-36-2) with 2% of silver. The fusion temp is low however with what I’m soldering, I use a 200 µm tip, so to achieve the proper temp on the very end of the tip, iron has to be pushed for the temp. (What I do on a daily base isn’t soldering on a breadboard like the one in the video).

    @FearTriX that’s correct. Tutorial made a long time ago and that’s a vocab issue (english is a second language to me). I was mentioning the solder joint as “round” as opposed a dab of cream with edges in various directions. I didn’t mean circular tough, indeed, if you get a sphere (and not a concave edge) there’s a huge chance that solder didn’t stick on the PCB or part. That’s also correct about the lead free solder.

    One last point that needs mentioning, the finished solder joint should not look ‘bumpy and round’ as you say. That is a defective solder joint as you cannot inspect the wetting of the solder on the pad. An accceptable solder join should have concave fillets aroung the component pin. It should look smooth and shiny with leaded solder, but it will not look shiny with lead free solder.

    Your solder looks like a 63/37% eutectic tin/lead solder alloy. This solder melts at 183degC. A setting of 420 degrees is way too high. 300 deg C is a good starting point, you can then increase the temperature until you get satisfactory solder joints. If you cannot achieve a good solder joint with tin/lead solder by 350deg C then your soldering iron tip/iron probably need maintenance. Also, for this type of PCB pads you should ideally use a 1.6mm chisel tip, not a pencil point tip.

    @irvinplecter You should pretin the parts or apply flux externally to remove any remaining oxides or glue (through-hole components) from the component leads.

    @martigan80 A damp sponge is not the preferred way to clean the tip as the thermal shock causes the iron, chrome and nickel platings of the tip to contract at different rates leading to premature failure.

    @irvinplecter For some soldering cases additional flux is needed from an applicator, say a flux pen. To tin the wired for example, you want to add flux on the wire and then apply the solder. Using more solder because the wire isnt fluxed wastes solder and decreases tip life.

    Good video. I love the fact that you use a tissue to clean the tip! I still use a sponge to shock the tip–but I guess that is just personal preference.

    @fakkyouhomo diodes forward voltage is measured in volt, not in ohm.

    does it matter if i replace a bad diode that was 530 ohm with a 480 ohm diode ?

    @MrJANTJE123 thank you ! I used to have a helping hand long ago, but consumes too much time overall, however, when you’re not ambidextrous, it’s really a useful device, especially for soldering 2 wires together, as you pointed out ! (thx again)

    the key to good soldering is …
    1) Good Iron.
    2) Clean the parts before soldering. A touch of finger is enough to ruin the joint.
    3) pre-tin the iron.
    4) heat the parts to solder not just the solder.
